Bahamas Sand is pure, naturally renewable marine aragonite sand that is 98% pure calcium carbonate combined with near chemical purity, size consistency and fine grain structure.
This aragonite sand is created by biogenic processes in the Bahamas region. Biological processes during the annual algal bloom extract almost pure calcium carbonate from the seawater and deposit it.
The sand is naturally oolite, meaning it is rounded in an "egg-shape". This is particularly advantageous when caring for SPS corals, as angular sand often gets stuck in the coralites.
Bahamas Coarse Sand is raw, naturally renewable aragonite sand that is 98% pure calcium carbonate. Coarse Aragonite is slightly coarser in grain size than the oolite variety. It is tasteless, odorless, dust-free and sustainable. Combined with its near chemical purity, size consistency and small grain structure, Bahamian Aragonite has numerous advantages that make it a superior source of calcium carbonate.
Advantages and Features
Bahamian Aragonite Aquarium Sand is the ideal substrate for marine, reef or African cichlid aquariums. It is a pure oolitic aragonite sand sourced from the crystal clear oceans of the Bahamas with no harmful tar, organics or contaminants. This aquarium sand has unmatched buffering ability and helps maintain a natural pH of 8.2 without the constant addition of chemicals. One kg of Oolitic Aragonite Aquarium Sand provides over 1 million cm² of surface area, providing a huge space for the host of ammonia, nitrate and nitrite reducing bacteria. Oolitic aragonite sand is the ideal grain size for reef tanks, aquariums, plenum systems and refugia.
Application:
Rinse the material well in a bucket with clean water. Do not use soap or other cleaning agents. Continue rinsing the material until the overflow water changes from a milky to a slightly cloudy appearance. Any remaining cloudiness will disappear after a few hours of pumping.
For best results when setting up a new aquarium, place rinsed sand in an empty aquarium and carefully fill with water. Start the filtration system. Wait until the water is clear enough to see the back of the aquarium and the chemical/pH/moderate is stable before adding fish and invertebrates.
For existing aquariums, rinse the substrate as described above and mix it into the established sand bed in small amounts over a period of several days. When using aragonite for African cichlids or other freshwater applications, it is important to note that slight cloudiness may persist until the aquarium cycle due to the high dissolution rates of calcium carbonate.
