What is a UV water clarifier and what is it used for?

A UV water clarifier uses ultraviolet light to kill harmful bacteria, viruses and algae in the water. It is used in aquariums to keep the water clear and free of harmful organisms. A UV water clarifier is particularly effective at reducing pathogens and improving water quality.

How does a UV water clarifier work?

The UV water clarifier contains a UV lamp that produces ultraviolet light. The UV radiation kills harmful organisms such as bacteria, viruses and algae. Thanks to the strong germ reduction, the UV water clarifier ensures improved water quality and reduces the risk of disease among aquarium inhabitants.

Effective protection against germ formation, bacterial water clouding and floating algae in marine and freshwater aquariums. Aquarists know the problems: despite careful care, their fish are swimming "in murky water" or the long-awaited, successful breeding of their fish fails due to fungal infection of the eggs... The cause of this is usually contamination of the aquarium water by bacterial microorganisms, water clouding or floating algae.

Their spread is prevented effectively, safely and without harmful side effects by using hw UV water clarifiers. In the mini aquarium ecosystem, the germ load is many times higher than in nature due to the limited water volume without hw® UV water clarifiers and causes an extremely heavy burden on the aquarium system. hw® UV water clarifiers ensure a natural balance and create near-natural conditions in the aquarium.

Functionality of a hw® UV water clarifier

In a closed irradiation chamber, the aquarium water is passed directly past an artificial, high-intensity UV-C radiation source. The bacterial microorganisms, water turbidity and floating algae in the water are irradiated with UV-C radiation so intensively that they are killed immediately or are no longer able to divide cells and die. With the hw® UV-C water clarification, only the aquarium water flowing through the special glass jacket is exposed to the germicidal effect of the UV-C light. The hw® UV water clarifier® is a special design that has proven itself more than 100,000 times in research facilities, in the commercial sector and in ambitious hobby aquaristics. Due to the extremely large contact surface to the direct UV-C radiation source, in combination with a small layer thickness (3-4 mm) of the water to be irradiated, an irradiation is achieved that is so intensive that it would otherwise only be possible with devices with almost twice the wattage.

The special glass jacket used acts as a UV-C radiation reflector, which reflects the UV-C radiation back into the irradiation chamber. In this way, the intensity of the irradiation is significantly increased and an increased power output is achieved. At the same time, the special glass jacket enables precise functional control of the UV-C burner and a status control of the irradiation chamber. The visible light penetrating outwards is completely filtered out and completely harmless (corresponding to the light emission of a normal neon fluorescent tube). During the UV-C irradiation, disinfected water from the hw® UV water clarifier is constantly mixed with germ-rich water from the aquarium (nitrification bacteria in the filter and substrate of the aquarium are not damaged by the UV-C irradiation).

This is not a complete "disinfection" of the entire aquarium water, but a strong reduction in the number of germs (maximum germ reduction in the entire aquarium system is approx. 98%) in the aquarium water. This is extremely important and necessary, because the germs remaining in the water (approx. 2 - 3%) maintain the fish's antibody production against pathogens and strengthen their immune system.
