The Magnesium Checker® HC for seawater is a handheld colorimeter that determines the magnesium concentration colorimetrically. The Magnesium Checker was specially developed for measurements in a seawater aquarium and uses the Beer-Lambert principle for the colorimetric determination of the magnesium concentration. The range from 1000 to 1800 ppm magnesium is suitable for reef aquariums that contain fish or fish and corals.

Magnesium is the third most abundant ion in seawater, surpassed only by sodium and chloride. Its abundance is critical for the formation of weak ion pairs with carbonate ions. This allows calcium and carbonate ions to be available for uptake by corals and invertebrates. Low magnesium levels result in low or unstable calcium and alkalinity levels. Signs of low magnesium levels include precipitation of calcium as insoluble calcium carbonate and impaired growth and health of inhabitants.

The CHECKER® HC mini photometers offer an interesting alternative between simple chemical test kits and compact measuring instruments. The handy photometers combine precision with an affordable price and are very easy to operate thanks to their large LCD and just one button. The automatic switch-off function ensures the longest possible battery life.

Ideal for aquariums and marine biology

Technical data:

Measuring range: 1000 to 1800 ppm magnesium
Resolution: 5 ppm
Accuracy @25°C: ±5% of measured value @25°C
light source: LED , @610nm
Light detector: silicon photocell
Method: Adaptation of the colorimetric EDTA method by Calmagit indicator. The reaction between magnesium and the reagent causes a blue to violet coloration
Interferences: Calcium in the sample between 300 and 500 ppm can cause interference , Calcium in the sample below 300 ppm and above 500 ppm can cause interference
Environmental conditions: Prepared cuvette (sample + reagent) should have 18 - 28°C , 0 to 50 °C , relative humidity max. 95%
Battery type: 1.5 V AA
Automatic shutdown: after 10 minutes
